米国民話「機械に勝った男 ジョン・ヘンリー」
何世代にもわたり語り継がれてきた1800年代後半の物語、「人間対蒸気ドリル」。なぜ彼の話は、現代を生きる私たちにとっても重要なのでしょうか？ これは単なる民話ではありません。ジョン・ヘンリーの挑戦は、人間の強さと決意、そしてテクノロジーが労働者に与える影響を象徴する、まさに神話的な物語と言えるでしょう。ジョン・ヘンリーは、鉄道を通すために岩にダイナマイトを仕込む穴を開けるハンマー使いでした。彼はその屈強な肉体と素晴らしいハンマーさばきで知られ、ある日、蒸気駆動のドリルが導入された際、人間と機械、どちらが強いのか競争を挑みます。ジョン・ヘンリーは信じられないほどの速さでハンマーを振り回し、見事に機械を打ち負かすことに成功しました。しかし、その過程で体を酷使し、大きな代償を払います。勝利を収めた直後、彼は力尽きて倒れてしまいました。

American folktale: John Henry, the man who beat machines
A story from the late 1800s that has been passed down for generations: “Man vs. steam drill.” Why is his story so important to us today? This is not just a folktale. John Henry’s challenge is a mythical tale that symbolizes human strength and determination, and the impact of technology on workers.
John Henry was a rock breaker who drilled holes in rocks to place dynamite so that railroads could pass through mountains. He was known for his strong physique and amazing hammering skills, and one day, when a steam-powered drill was introduced, he challenged the machine to a race to see who was better, the machine or the man. John Henry swung his hammer with incredible speed and successfully defeated the machine. However, in the process, he overworked his body and paid a heavy price. Immediately after his victory, he collapsed from exhaustion.
The wave of mechanization and human dignity
At the root of John Henry’s story is the struggle between workers and machines. When the Industrial Revolution dramatically changed the way people worked, many workers feared that machines would take their jobs. This concern is equally present for us today. Automation and artificial intelligence have the potential to replace workers not only in factories and offices, but also in the creative industries. For example, what is the essential value required of human creators when AI can generate design proposals and write texts in a short time?
The story of John Henry wanted to show us not only about work. Through his confrontation with the steam drill, he teaches us that human diligence and skill are important even in an age of rapid evolution.
Lessons for the Modern Era
The legend of John Henry continues to inspire many people today. His story has been sung in folk songs, taught in school lessons, and even made into a film. His story tells us that no matter how much machines take over the workforce, nothing can beat human perseverance.
