映画産業の始まりは、偉大な発明家の研究室から
今日、映画といえばハリウッドや大画面を思い浮かべるでしょう。しかし、映画の歴史を語る上で欠かせない人物がいます。それが、電球の発明で知られるトーマス・エジソンです。
1800年代後半、エジソンと彼のチームは、短編映画を撮影するための最初のカメラの一つ、キネトグラフを開発しました。そして、その映像を一人で覗き込んで見るための機械、キネトスコープも生み出しました。初期の映画は、人々が踊ったり、重いものを持ち上げたりするだけの短いものでしたが、これは当時としては革新的で、見る者を大いに驚かせました。
映画スタジオの原型「ブラック・マリア号」

The film industry began in the laboratory of a great inventor.
Today, when we think of movies, we think of Hollywood and the big screen. However, there’s one person who’s essential to the history of film: Thomas Edison, known for inventing the light bulb.
In the late 1800s, Edison and his team developed the Kinetograph, one of the first cameras for shooting short films. They also created the Kinetoscope, a machine that allowed a single person to view the footage. Early films consisted of short scenes featuring people dancing or lifting heavy objects, but they were revolutionary for their time and greatly amazed viewers.
The Black Maria: The Prototype of the Movie Studio
In 1893, Edison founded America’s first movie studio, the “Black Maria.” This studio could rotate on wheels to maximize sunlight. It’s as if we’re seeing the origins of today’s pursuit of lighting and cinematography in filmmaking.While Edison didn’t create the epic stories we see in movie theaters today, it’s said that without his inventions, the art form of film would likely have been far less developed. He showed people that images weren’t just for spectacle; they had the power to tell stories and captivate audiences.
The Surprising Reason for the Birth of Hollywood
But Edison also had a dark side. He attempted to monopolize the film industry using patents for his inventions. To escape this aggressive approach, many filmmakers left the East Coast and relocated to the West Coast, particularly California, where patent rights were not an issue. This is one of the surprising reasons why Hollywood became the world’s movie capital.
While his merits may be subject to debate, Thomas Edison’s contribution to transforming the new technology of film into one of the world’s most influential arts remains undeniable. Today, we enjoy movies on our smartphones and streaming services, but the roots of all of this can be traced back to Edison’s laboratories.
